The Alaska Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization established to (1) educate alaskans and visitors to the state about the people, events, and moments in alaskan sport (2) honor and preserve the memory of significant people, events, and moments in alaskan sport, and (3) promote a healthy youth population by providing activities that will inspire children to strive for success in their own lives.
The five people, two moments and one event that constitute the Class of 2009 were enshrined into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the ConocoPhillips atrium in Anchorage February 26th. Red Boucher, Nina Kemppel, Wally Leask, Hilary Lindh and Norman Vaughan were the five people to be honored. The first winter ascent of Mount McKinley in 1967 and Doug Herron's record-breaking track performance in 1985 were the two moments to be inducted. The World Eskimo-Indian Olympics was the event to be enshrined.
The evening event featured video biographies, trophy presentations and acceptance speeches for each inductee. Photos of the event can be viewed and purchased by going to the photo gallery link.
